Is there a ‘best’ hair loss treatment?  Probably not.  People are different, and so are their reactions to the various hair loss treatments.  But was can make some very good assumptions as to what would offer a man the best chance of succeeding in his hair loss treatment, based on many scientific studies.

Below you’ll see our recommendation for what should be a good combination of products, working together to give you the best outcome.  Of course, we would always recommend you take the basic steps towards a healthier you, including healthy hair.  Stop smoking, stop drinking too much, lower your stress, etc. – all easy to say, all not-so-easy to do.

1. Minoxidil

Of course Minoxidil!  Regardless of the brand you choose, the active ingredient Minoxidil, has been show time and time again to be a very effective treatment for Male Pattern Baldness.  Millions of men, worldwide, are currently using some form of Minoxidil, and with good reason… it works!

Minoxidil, the generic name for Rogaine, is an over the counter medication used to treat male pattern baldness. It comes in a topical solution and foam. The product is applied to the scalp twice a day.

2. Finasteride

Minoxidil helps from the outside, Finasteride helps from the inside.  On it’s own, Finasteride isn’t too effective, but does help by inhibiting the male hormone, testosterone, from  shedding hair.  There are some reports of decreased sexual function, but none that seem to outweigh the benefits to hair.

Finasteride, the generic alternative to Propecia and Proscar, is an oral prescription medication used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and male pattern baldness. The recommended dose for hair loss is one tablet (1 mg) per day.

3. Nizoral

Perhaps the least effective product on the list, Ketoconazole shampoos like Nizoral have been shown to increase the size and proportion of anagen hair follicles at a similar rate to the minoxidil spray.  Nizoral is an excellent, medicated shampoo which helps a lot of men. It’s a good combo treatment for hair loss, but not so good on its own. The active ingredient in Nizoral is Ketoconazole, an anti-fungal treatment and mild anti-androgen that may be able to block DHT at the scalp.
