Kirkland Minoxidil vs Rogaine

Kirkland Minoxidil vs Rogaine

Kirkland Minoxidil vs Rogaine.  Rogaine and Regaine are trade names owned by Johnson and Johnson.  The active ingredient in both is… Minoxidil!  Exactly the same ingredient as Kirkland Minoxidil, but a lot cheaper!

Kirkland Minoxidil vs Rogaine

Is there any difference?

Well, yes, but not where it matters.  There is just one ingredient in Rogaine that prevents hair loss.  That ingredient is Minoxidil, the same as Kirkland Minoxidil.

Kirkland Minoxidil and Rogaine do have slightly different, non-medicinal ingredients, but the one we’re interested in is exactly the same.  Both products contain the ‘inactive’ ingredients, Alcohol, Propylene Glycol and Purified Water.

Both Kirkland and Rogaine contain propylene glycol, which is the most likely cause of some mild irritation.  Propylene glycol is used in many hundreds, if not thousands, of hair and cosmetic products and has the effect of speed up the absorption of the active Minoxidil in to your skin.  Rogaine contains a number of other alcohol substances, including stearyl alcohol and SD alcohol, intended to improve the delivery of the Minoxidil, but also bring their own irritation issues.

Rogaine has been on the market longer than Kirkland Minoxidil, but can be significantly more expensive.  Often as much as double the price.

And the active ingredient is exactly the same!

Kirkland Minoxidil vs Rogaine

The history of Minoxidil, as with many great discoveries, came about entirely by chance.  The formula was initially being tested to treat those with high blood pressure, but what was then a ‘side effect’ of excessive hair growth associated with Minoxidil, quickly became not a side effect, but an intended effect.

Johnson and Johnson were the first company to sell Minoxidil, specifically as a hair loss treatment, in the form of Rogaine.

Since then, Minoxidil and its efficacy are in no doubt, regardless of the brand name on the bottle.

In conclusion, Rogaine is (almost) exactly the same as Kirkland Minoxidil.  Kirkland is cheaper – much cheaper – and contains fewer non-essential ingredients, the most common causes of skin irritation when using Minoxidil.  Our recommendation (it should be obvious) is to choose the less expensive Kirkland Minoxidil!
