Minoxidil for Men. Kirkland Signature Minoxidil 5% Extra Strength for men is the only FDA approved concentration and higher concentrations do not mean better hair growth – they may even be dangerous. 5% concentration Minoxidil is the best.

Minoxidil for Men
5% strength is the ideal Minoxidil for men. It is the FDA approved concentration for men with Male Pattern Baldness. While there’s plenty of evidence that beard growth is significantly improved, so far, evidence is anecdotal. The 2% versions of Minoxidil (like Regaine) are marketed to women, not men, although men will benefit just as well as women.
Why 5%, Not 10% or Higher?
Simply, because it isn’t twice as effective. A study by the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, tested 2% and 5% concentrations and concluded that 5% was only 45% more effective. Let’s do the maths, from 2% to 5% is a 150% increase in dosage, so you might think that would equate to a 150% increase in hair growth. But it didn’t. It only increased effectiveness by 45%. One third of what we might expect.
The same goes for the 10% and higher concentrations. 5% is the optimum concentration.
2% and 5% concentrations are also the only ones approved by the American FDA (2% is recommended for women, read more on that here).
While available from some suppliers, 10% Minoxidil is still an experimental hair loss treatment. We absolutely recommend you speak with your doctor before using any 10% Minoxidil product, as it is NOT FDA approved. The 10 and higher % concentrations also are likely to being about the more rare side effects, like chest pains, changes in blood pressure, a rapid or irregular heartbeat, heart palpitations, headaches, dizziness, faintness are some of the more serious side effects of Minoxidil use.
10% Minoxidil probably works better than the 5% formula, but not twice as effective and obviously it comes with more risks and potential downsides. Keep that in mind. Whether you opt to try 2%, 5%, or 10% minoxidil, there could be side effects — and remember, twice the minoxidil doesn’t necessary mean double the effectiveness!
